Why Women Like Fantasy

In the same way that men do, women read fantasy because they enjoy exciting stories set in imaginative places, with clever plot lines and intriguing characters. Women also read fantasy because they like to imagine a world where men and women relate to each other on a level playing field. For better and for worse, fantasy provides a way for us to see just how level the playing field is between men and women, as well as what needs to be improved. In an ideal world, men are still men, and women are still women, but instead of being adversaries when they relate to each other, they are allies. Instead of one sex succeeding at the expense of the other, …

Entering the Unknown

When I was nineteen, I hopped a Yugoslavian freighter, and jumped ship in Casa Blanca for no other reason than it sounded like a romantic and adventurous way to get across the Atlantic. I didn’t have any idea about where the journey would end up taking me. Months later while I was travelling in Europe, my older sister was back in the States studying with Joseph Campbell at Sarah Lawrence College. I wrote to her telling her that I was becoming interested in Indian philosophy. She was excited about her professor’s work, and on a hunch she sent me a copy of Campbell’s book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. When I began reading the book, I remember feeling that I …

The Mythic Influences on the Writing of Secrets of the Rainbow Bridge

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ~Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken I’ve been reminded of Robert Frost’s words over and over again as I’ve heard Douglas Rosestone’s story about the direction he took in his life forty years ago—at the juncture when the teachings of Joseph Campbell and J. Krishnamurti first entered his life. And, more recently how fortuitous the interplay of both teachers’ lessons have been on guiding the mythical theme for Secrets of the Rainbow Bridge (SOTRB), a book he is co-writing with his wife, Olivia and son, Jonah. In 1966, at age 19, while Douglas was living on the Mediterranean …

Why I Write Fantasy by Jonah Rosestone

People need wonder so they can connect to something greater than themselves. Everyday life can be very disheartening. Many of us toil away at jobs we dislike, or at best we are indifferent towards. Certainly, a lucky few are on top of the world working their dream jobs, but for the rest of us commoners, we are where we are because our professions were thrust upon us, or because they were our only opportunities in life. When we are asked in job interviews why we have chosen our paths, we say, “I do this because I want to make a difference.” But, deep down inside many of us wonder if we really can. Fantasy allows us to vicariously be part …
